Free Uppercase Letter Prewriting + Handwriting Practice Sheets

Graphic promoting a free resource for uppercase letter prewriting and handwriting, featuring a starry background and text: 'Uppercase Letter Prewriting + Handwriting'.

When I designed these handwriting pages, I wanted them to be both developmentally appropriate and fun. The order is influenced by UFLI’s Getting Ready curriculum, but you can absolutely adjust as needed for your learner.

Uppercase vs. Lowercase

Some handwriting programs begin with lowercase letters, while others begin with uppercase. Both approaches are valid! I start with uppercase because many children find them simpler to form—fewer curves and more straight lines. Most importantly, I recommend beginning with prewriting strokes before tackling any letters. These build the fine motor control kids need for success.

Prewriting Comes First

Before diving into the alphabet, children benefit from tracing and practicing lines, curves, zigzags, and shapes. These skills transfer directly into letter formation. Think of it as the warm-up before the main event.

Making Handwriting Fun

Handwriting doesn’t have to be just pencil and paper! Kids learn best when they can move, explore, and play. Some ideas:

  • Hands-on practice: Form letters with playdough, sticks, or pipe cleaners.
  • Cross-the-midline activities: Big arm movements, rainbow writing, and drawing large shapes in the air strengthen coordination.
  • Multi-sensory practice: Use sand trays, chalk, shaving cream, or finger paint.
  • Sky writing: Trace letters in the air with your whole arm to reinforce muscle memory.

Why Handwriting Matters

Handwriting is more than neat penmanship—it’s about communication. When kids realize that their marks on a page can share their thoughts and ideas with others, it’s powerful! One fun project is having kids create their own alphabet books and “read” them aloud to family or friends. It builds pride, confidence, and a deeper connection to written language.
